Vandals damage memorial statue

WARD Park was targeted by vandals over the weekend, who caused considerable damage to the bronze statue which sits on the cenotaph.

The figure is situated on the north side of the memorial and depicts the figure Erin holding a palm leaf, said to symbolise victory.

The Spectator learned about the incident after receiving an anonymous phone call on Monday afternoon.

Those responsible have broken off a section of the palm leaf, leaving the pieces scattered around the base of the memorial.

This incident comes only weeks after swastikas were daubed near the memorial site, causing outrage within the community.

A North Down Borough Council spokesperson responded to this latest incident, saying, "Council officers have inspected the war memorial in Ward Park, Bangor and assessed the damage.

"We will be proceeding with repairs immediately, however, some specialist work may be required that will slow the process a little.

"All possible efforts will be made to fully restore the memorial as soon as possible," she added.
