Former Bangor priest in court

A FORMER Bangor parish priest has appeared in court charged with child sex abuse charges.

Father James Donaghy faced 15 serious charges including sexual assault when he appeared before Belfast Magistrate´s Court last Friday (12th).

The sexual offences are alleged to have been committed between 1983 and 2000. It is understood that his alleged victims included boys aged under 16 years of age.

Fr Donaghy was released on bail to appear before the same court on April 9.

The 52 year old, who worked at Belfast International Airport after stepping down from clerical duties, was charged by police with the offences on January 28.

It is understood that Fr Donaghy - who is still a member of the Catholic clergy - was employed by Menzies Aviation, the handling agent for airline Easyjet, after leaving his duties at St Comgall´s Church in Bangor. It remains unclear whether Fr Donaghy is still employed by the firm.

The Down and Connor diocese declined to comment on Fr Donaghy´s appearance in court saying, "The diocese of Down and Connor is aware of an ongoing investigation and intended prosecution of a priest from the diocese.

"This matter is part of an ongoing police investigation and as such it would be inappropriate for the diocese to make any further comment at this time."
