Crime spree costs £3,000

VANDALS caused over £3,000 worth of damage during a three day crime spree in the Bangor town centre area.

The Spectator understands that a number of buildings, including a local church and a children’s nursery were damaged in this wave of lawlessness.

Managers at the Banardo’s Charity Home, on the Manse Road, first reported over £1,000 worth of damage had been caused when windows were smashed on July 19.

Just two days later, Bangor’s Inner Neighbourhood Police team were further alerted to more vandalism,

Complaints were received from Bangor Abbey, Trinity Nursery, Translink and St Andrew’s Church at Clandeboye Road, Bangor.

At each of the locations offenders had smashed several windows or damaged shutters in acts of random vandalism.

The Spectator was told a bus shelter was also smashed on Bangor’s  Newtownards Road and pedestrians were forced to stand in the rain while the shelter was out of service.

Constable Emma Kyle, the investigating officer,  was quick to act upon the reports of damage and viewed CCTV evidence. Thanks to her neighbourhood knowledge she believed she could identify some of the suspects.

Three young people were apprehended.

Constable Kyle said, “Police had to act quickly to stop this spate of damage which had the cost of repair running into approximately £3,000."
