NORTH Down’s councillors cost the rate payer £296,806 last year.And thousands more pounds of public money was paid to send councillors to oversee the failed North Down and Ards council merger.
All 26 councillors pick up a basic allowance of £9,738 and some have claimed for travel costs and ‘other expenses’ totalling £22,606.
Those in senior positions such as chairs of committees also get a ‘special responsibility’ allowance. This totalled £30,750.
Nineteen councillors claimed for travel and subsistence costs which includes accommodation and food expenses.
Eighteen councillors were paid ‘other expenses’ which include costs for attending courses and conferences.
The figures were published at North Down Borough Council’s July meeting on Tuesday night (27th).
Highest claimer was last year’s mayor Tony Hill who picked up £16,327 mainly due to his position as the Borough’s first citizen.
