BANGOR husband and wife, Trevor and Sally McMechan have come up smelling of roses after their recent success at Rose Week.This popular annual event took place between from July 13-18 at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park in Belfast.
Organized by Belfast City Council in conjunction with the Rose Society, the event has music and competitions as well as the judging of international trial roses by a panel of experts.
Mr McMechan, who has been taking part in the competition for the past 10 years, won the Sam McGredy plaque for ‘Best Rose in the Show’ as well as five other awards spanning 1st to 3rd place.
Wife Sally was also successful in the competition, winning two 1st places as well as a 2nd and 3rd place in the miniature rose category.
The couple has entered many competitions over the years and Mr McMechan says it remains an enjoyable pastime for them.
“I’ve been growing roses for 52 years. Wherever we’ve lived, we’ve always had roses about us. Rose week is a great event; they really put a lot of effort into it and it is always really enjoyable,” he said.
