Five out of six schools get full marks

FIVE out of six North Down schools looking for new buildings have been given a clean bill of health.

The six Bangor and Holywood schools are featured in the Department of Education’s review of all planned new buildings in Northern Ireland.

One school, St Columbanus College in Bangor, has been evaluated as only partially compliant with government policies, meaning that the department feels there are what it describes as ‘some issues to be resolved’ over the long-term worth of its new build.

The specific issues with St Columbanus haven’t been revealed, however, with the only clues being that the ‘partially compliant’ grade means there are still questions over ‘the school or concerning issues of sustainability in the area’.

Given the green light are the four schools in the £15m overhaul of Holywood education, taking in Priory Integrated College, Holywood and Redburn primaries and Holywood Nursery.

Bangor Grammar has also been listed as fully compliant with department policies, but the heads of both the Grammar and Priory have complained that this isn’t of any real practical help.
