Ghouls target graves

CALLOUS thieves are robbing precious mementos from the graves of loved ones at a  local Bangor cemetery.

Following this chilling revelation, North Down Borough Council officials are now advising Clandeboye Cemetery visitors to be vigilant.

During the past month six families have been left distressed following the theft of mementos from a relative’s grave.

Cemetery staff have received reports that flowers, plants, vases and flower holders have been stolen from a number of graves.

The thefts from the well maintained Belfast Road cemetery have shocked and saddened local residents, as well as elected representatives.

Stephen Conn,  Council Cemetery Superintendent, told the Spectator that he suspects that other graves may also have been targeted but  the families concerned have not reported the theft.”

He said, “It is a sad fact that some people have no compunction about stealing from gravesides. It is, however, usually a very rare occurrence but with six incidences of theft reported to cemetery staff during the past month we are keen to alert visitors to the problem.”
